Intimate Structures

BFA Thesis - May 2019

While analyzing the physical surroundings of my upbringing, I have noticed many of the buildings close to my childhood home have deteriorated due to weather, age or abandonment. This transition brings to mind my own transformation as I’ve encountered traumatic situations throughout my lifetime. Therefore, within my work, I draw comparisons between the architectural structure and the effects of trauma within the human experience. The passage of time is physically apparent amongst the aforementioned; the structure is built new and strong until the forces of nature commence it’s deterioration and the human mind adapts to the traumas it endures over a lifetime. The surfaces of my sculptures appear aged and deteriorated to symbolize the trauma one may endure and overcome throughout a lifetime. I also reference interior versus exterior, as I will often build a delicate or fragile structure encased by a strong protective barrier, this relationship between forms represents the inner turmoil society often encourages one to mask by maintaining composure.
